According to Mutarrif b. ʿAbd Allah b. al-Shikhkhir, his father (ra) said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “The stray article of the Muslim is the burning flame of Hell.” (Ibn Maja, al-Luqata, 1)

According to ʿIyad b. Himar (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “He who finds something should call one or two trusty persons as witnesses and not conceal it or cover it up; then if he finds its owner he should return it to him, otherwise it is Allah’s property which He gives to whom He will.” (Abu Daʾud, al-Luqata, 1)

According to Jabir b. ʿAbd Allah (ra), “The Messenger of Allah permitted us to use a stick, a rope, a whip and other such things, which a man might pick up from the ground, and benefit from them.” (Abu Daʾud, al-Luqata, 1)

According to Zayd b. Khalid al-Juhani (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “He who found a stray article is himself led astray if he does not advertise it.” (Muslim, al-Luqata, 12)
